The system is capable of scanning and photographing up to 6,000 license plates an hour and then comparing the licenses in various databases. Initially, the equipment will compare the tags with state and national databases of stolen vehicles but possible future applications will include identifying plates that belong to owners with felony warrants; sex offenders too close to schools, and persons who can be connected to missing children alerts. The system will also be utilized as a proactive enforcement approach to identifying vehicles that may be carrying mass quantities of narcotics for trafficking. When the system identifies a tag that is listed as stolen, the deputy has probable cause to stop the vehicle.
