Benton County, founded September 30, 1836, was formed from Washington County and is located in the northwest corner of Arkansas.

The town of Bentonville was created and set as the county seat in 1837.

The first county courthouse was built that same year.

The first jail for Benton County was built on the north side of the east and west street.

The first store in Maysville opened in 1839.

The first trial for murder was held in May 1841 and Edward Welch was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to seven years in the jail of Benton County.

In November of 1841 Harrison Oliver was tried for retailing liquors and fined $1.

Wat Foreman a Cherokee Indian was indicted for murder in November 1842.

The population of Benton County in 1870 was 13,782.

In May 1871 a contract was awarded in the amount of $33,000 to build a courthouse and jail.

During the same time frame Franklin Saunders and William King were indicted for the murder of James M. Lefors.
